A full house at a Collision Workshop held at Campbell Johnston Clark’s London office on 31 July has persuaded the firm to repeat the event in September, so that a new audience can take part in an interactive session which aims to bring a casualty scenario to life.
CJC Director/Mariner Andrew Gray and Senior Associate/Master Mariner Stephen Angove led a group of 40 insurance claims professionals through an exploration of a claim based on an imagined collision between a container ship and a bulk carrier off Singapore.
In a role-playing scenario, attendees were tasked with joining one of seven teams, each working through the challenges brought by the collision and collaborating to find possible solutions. To spice things up, new information and developments were thrown into the mix to reflect real life experience.
The scenario established the roles of different parties, liability apportionment under the Colregs and the likely claims arising from the casualty, while discussing the key documentation and evidence required, law and jurisdiction and obtaining security to enable the claims to move forward.
Feedback on content, structure and approach was highly positive from a group including many younger professionals, as well as representation from seasoned specialists and a number of Master Mariners
Discussions with attendees also acknowledged how mixing with representatives from other P&I Clubs at a post-workshop reception and establishing informal relationships with peers would only benefit a collegiate approach to dispute resolution.
CJC’s next Collision Workshop, scheduled for 16.00-18.00, September 18th, 2024 at CJC’s offices at 59 Mansell St, London, E1 8AN.
